What is Smell retraining therapy/ odour training?
It is a way to help rebuild the connection between the nose and the brain to recover the sense of smell. Similar to exercising a muscle, practicing smelling can strengthen the olfactory system. This concept is used to help train professionals like sommeliers or perfume creators but can also be applied to our patients who have lost or experienced a significant decline in their sense of smell.
Research has shown that a regimen of practicing smelling can aid in the recovery of the sense of smell. Patients who participated in a smell retraining regimen had significant improvement in their sense of smell, compared to those who did not. The original research was done with 4 essential oils- rose, eucalyptus, lemon, and clove.
Odor training is not a medicine but a way to speed up and stimulate recovery. Think of it as a form of physiotherapy for the nose.
Practice as follows:
Smell each scent for 10 seconds in a natural breathing way, at least twice daily.
Period of the training
To notice the effect of the odor training, you must carry out the training for several months. Various studies have shown that the first result is often noticeable after 6-7 months. It is also important that you do it daily. In the morning and in the evening. Put the fragrance in a handy place so that you do not forget it and you can train your sense of smell daily.
